This time we'd like to share with you a fundamental aspect of our winemaking philosophy: the choice to adopt the ancient system of cultivation of the alberello vine for all the vineyards of Tenuta di Castellaro on the island of Lipari.
This cultivation method considers each single plant as an individual and the vineyard as a harmonious community.
The quincunx planting pattern, in which each vine is located at the vertex of an equilateral triangle with a distance of 1.20 m x 1.20 m, guarantees the vitis vinifera a total 360° exposure to atmospheric events. Each head-trained bush develops a taproot system that goes deep into the soil, absorbing minerals and elements that give our wines unique characteristics.
The vineyards of Tenuta di Castellaro have a high planting density, on average with 7,000 vines per hectare, with peaks of 9,000.
The alberello cultivation has ancient origins, dating back to the Phoenicians even before the ancient Romans, who introduced this technique to adapt the vine to otherwise challenging climatic conditions. This method has been perfected over time, becoming a symbol of resilience and quality. The alberello was recognized in 2014 as an Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, for its cultural and agricultural importance.
The dedication that we reserve at Tenuta di Castellaro for every phase of cultivation and production allows us to offer authentic wines that stand out for their uniqueness and excellence.
We often talk about "Contemporary Craftsmanship", a concept that summarizes the approach to viticulture at Tenuta di Castellaro: the use of ancient and advanced technologies, in the vineyard and cellar, is aimed at enhancing the principles of traditional winemaking practices.
Respect for the environment, for people and for tradition are the pillars of the philosophy of Tenuta di Castellaro, a project that aims to enhance human resources, integration with the territory, use of natural resources, enhancement of the landscape and deep respect for local history and culture.
Precisely the cultivation of saplings, so methodical in its oenological functionality, allows us to contribute to making the already unique landscape of the Aeolian Islands harmonious and orderly.
We invite you to discover for yourself the beauty of our vineyards, coming or returning to visit us! Experience the quality of our wines, the fruit of this thousand-year-old tradition and an authentic passion.
