Malvasia, the most famous grape variety of the Aeolian Islands

Malvasia is the most famous grape variety of the Aeolian Islands, having found its ideal environment in the Mediterranean and volcanic context of the archipelago. Thanks to a combination of tradition, innovation and centuries of history, this variety has become one of the most iconic and appreciated in Italian winemaking.

Malvasias are ancient vines of controversial origin, and that of Malvasia delle Lipari is probably linked to the Greek world: its name derives from the city of Monemvasía, in the Peloponnese, which means "port with a single entrance". Grown on the volcanic and sandy soils of the Aeolian Islands, which give the wine a perfect balance between aromas, sugars and acidity, Malvasia is vinified in various forms: passito, passito fortified and dry white.

For the natives of the Aeolian Islands, Malvasia represents the wine of traditions, handed down from generation to generation and linked to the family. This grape variety symbolizes not only the nostalgia for the past, but also the desire to revalue it and give it a new contemporary dimension.

Thanks to its versatility, Malvasia is now interpreted in modern versions as a dry, fresh and fruity white wine. Tenuta di Castellaro is working to enhance this multifaceted variety, strongly influenced by the encounter between volcanic land and sea, which acquires unique characteristics in the Aeolian Islands.

A DOC that of Malvasia delle Lipari which obtained the denomination on September 20, 1973: a historic date that marked the destiny of identity wines produced exclusively in the Aeolian archipelago.

 

Tenuta di Castellaro produces three wines based on Malvasia delle Lipari

The first and best known is our super classic Bianco Pomice, a blend of dry Malvasia delle Lipari and Carricante, or two opposite varieties that attract each other to fit together perfectly in a final result that has now made the history of Aeolian and Sicilian wine in general. We have the splendid 2022 vintage on the market for a couple of months, already well-aged in the bottle and therefore ready for tasting.

Then there is the Malvasia delle Lipari DOC passito, produced exclusively in the 0.375 ml format as per tradition, now on sale with the 2019 vintage. It is a golden and rich wine with intense notes of dried fruit, honey, apricots and Mediterranean herbs, balanced by a fresh acidity. It pairs wonderfully with Sicilian desserts, small pastries, blue cheeses or enjoyed as a meditation wine. It cannot be missing from your personal cellar, ready for the next occasion!

Finally, our latest creation, Eúxenos, a dry and pure version of the Malvasia delle Lipari, this time lightly macerated in a cocciopesto amphora, where it ages for many months before being put on the market. A true Aeolian masterpiece, dedicated to those looking for something truly unique and inimitable, and to the most passionate fans of Tenuta di Castellaro.
