The Cellar
Nature at the Cutting EdgeTenuta di Castellaro: A Tribute to Landscape, Art, Architecture, and Technology
From the site of an old ruin, the largest bioenergetic winery in the Aeolian Islands was born on the Castellaro Plain.
The geological history of Lipari is told through the columns of the completely underground barrel cellar, inspired by the Norman Cloister, a historic symbol of the city of Lipari.
The elegance of the Alberello vine, the caper plantations, and a “wild” landscape project designed to enhance the native flora enrich the natural setting with rare aesthetic beauty.

A Unique Construction Technique
Architects Michele Giannetti and Alessandro Dal Piaz collaborated with the owners from the very beginning on the ambitious Tenuta di Castellaro project.
The zero-impact cellar was built using a distinctive construction technique that makes it one of a kind—a must-visit location celebrated for its historical, architectural, and artistic significance.
The Architecture
In the initial phase, the earth was shaped to form the pillars and vaults. Once the reinforcements were in place, the concrete was poured.
After 28 days, the earth surrounding the pillars was excavated, and from that moment, history took center stage. The textures and colors of the columns, which reflect the various volcanic phenomena that have occurred on the island, narrate over 20,000 years of geological eras.

Respect for Nature
Lipari is sun and wind, and based on the principle of respecting nature, we harness these natural resources through solar chimneys and the wind tower.
The solar chimneys are designed to naturally capture sunlight and diffuse it throughout the barrel cellar, almost entirely eliminating the need for electric lighting.
The wind tower creates a natural air conditioning system, maintaining the ideal temperature and humidity levels to ensure the perfect aging of our wines.
